Metro Announces Contract Award for Environmentally-Friendly Buses
October 28, 2017
Metro Transit’s fleet is getting greener with the receipt of five new buses and the contract award for 23 more to replace older models.
The five 30-foot buses were placed into service last week. Also, in keeping with Metro’s sustainability initiative, Metro awarded contracts for delivery of 23 additional buses at its September Board of Director’s meeting. Eleven of the new buses on order will be powered by Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and twelve powered by clean diesel
Alexander Dennis, Inc. is the manufacturer of the twelve 35-foot clean diesel models with a 2018 delivery beginning in late June and completed by September. New Flyer Industries is the manufacturer of the twelve 35-foot CNG buses with receipt slated for December 2018.
The contract to purchase the buses is multi-year with options to purchase additional buses over the next five years. The 23 buses were a $9.7 million purchase financed with federal matching funds. The Federal Transit Administration’s contribution of $8.3 million will be matched by a $1.4 million allocation from Metro.
Metro operates fixed, express and ADA paratransit public transit services within the City of Omaha, Nebraska, and contracted service for five contiguous jurisdictions. For more information about Metro Transit services, routes, or schedules, visit www.ometro.com or call 402-341-0800.
