Nebraska Public Transit Week 2016

Governor Pete Ricketts has proclaimed April 10-16, 2016 as Public Transit Week in the State of Nebraska. The Metro Transit Board of Directors has also passed a resolution reaffirming this recognition and extending their thanks to all Metro employees for their important role in delivering high quality transit service to the Omaha area.
Metro encourages customers to download a Thank-You Card to give to their favorite bus or MOBY operator.
Metro will also celebrate Nebraska Public Transit Week by offering riders surprise free-fare promotions throughout the week. Lucky riders boarding during these 30 minute time periods will ride for free on all routes! These free fare periods will be randomly selected by our dispatching center and announced on the buses. When the 30 minutes is over, regular fares will resume.
On Saturday April 16th, Metro will host “Stuff the Bus to End Hunger” at Baker’s on 120th & Center from 8:00am to 2:00pm, with all proceeds going to the Food Bank for the Heartland. Those that donate a food item will receive a free 2 ride bus ticket.
Transit has served the cities of Omaha and Council Bluffs for nearly 150 years, dating back as far as 1867. Public transit helps manage the region’s carbon footprint by reducing the number of cars on the road, thereby lessening harmful emissions. It helps in sustaining and promoting economic development and provides a vital lifeline and connection for all citizens. Metro’s fixed routes and MOBY services together operate over 4,000,000 miles per year, going about the business of taking people safely where they want and need to go.
Public transportation plays an important role in making our state strong and prosperous. More than 7 million rides were provided by public transit in Nebraska during 2015, over half of which occurred on Metro’s transit system. Thousands of people rely on transit each day to take them to work, medical appointments, school, and a host of other destinations that contribute to the economic vitality and quality of life in our state. In 2016, the Nebraska Association of Transportation Providers also commemorates its 35th anniversary of service to our state’s citizens.
